Fitting Molokini Into a Cruise Call

Hawaii cruise ships call on Maui at Kahului Harbor on the island’s north shore. Molokini lies off the opposite, south coast, but Maui is narrow there, and Maʻalaea Harbor, the main Molokini departure point, is across the island’s central isthmus from Kahului.

That geography makes a Molokini morning very doable on a cruise. On the weekly inter-island sailing from Honolulu, the ship has traditionally spent an overnight at Kahului, which gives you an easy choice of morning boats. On longer voyages from the mainland, Maui is often a single day, so timing matters more. Either way, the crater is best in the morning, which suits a day that starts when the gangway opens.

A Sample Maui Day

  • Early morning: leave the ship as soon as you can and transfer to Maʻalaea.
  • Mid-morning: snorkel inside Molokini crater while the water is calm.
  • Late morning: second stop along the south-Maui coast for turtles.
  • Early afternoon: back at the harbor, lunch nearby, return to Kahului.
  • Afternoon: Kahului’s shops, or simply rest before the evening sail-away.

Avoid stacking Haleakalā’s summit or another long drive onto a dive day, and keep the ship’s port agent number with you.

Choosing the Right Hawaii Cruise for Maui

Not every Hawaii cruise gives Maui the same time. Island-hopping sailings from Honolulu usually include a long stay; Pacific crossings from the West Coast may stop for a single day, and a few itineraries skip Maui. Our sibling site Cruise Hawaii compares inter-island and mainland sailings, and Hawaii-Cruise.com has a quick overview. For live promotions on Hawaii sailings, see Wave Season.

Cruise Passenger Questions

Do cruise ships stop at Lahaina?

Cruise ships calling on Maui use Kahului Harbor. Lahaina’s small-boat harbor was destroyed in the August 2023 wildfires and reopened to limited commercial small-boat operations in December 2025, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. Check your own itinerary for the Maui port; we have not seen cruise tendering at Lahaina confirmed since then.

Is the cruise line excursion or an independent tour better?

A ship excursion guarantees the ship waits if the boat is late. An independent tour can offer more choice of boat and time. If you go independently, pick the earliest departure and leave a large margin before all-aboard.

How do I get from the pier to Maʻalaea?

Ship excursions include the transfer. Independently, you need a taxi, ride-share or rental car; car rental lots are near Kahului Airport, a short ride from the harbor.
