The Best Time to Snorkel Molokini
Go early, any month of the year, and add whales in winter.
Plan a Maui Cruise With MolokiniMorning Is the Rule
The best time to snorkel Molokini is early morning, any time of year. The channel is usually smoothest after dawn, visibility in the crater is at its best, and you are back before the trade winds build.
Hawaii’s trade winds blow from the northeast and funnel across the isthmus between Maui’s two volcanoes, so by midday the water off Maʻalaea can be choppy and whitecapped. That is why most crater trips leave at or soon after sunrise, and why afternoon trips more often switch to a sheltered coastal site. If you have a choice, book the first departure of the day.
Season by Season
| Season | What to expect at Molokini |
|---|---|
| December–April | Humpback whale season: whales are common in Maui’s channels and often seen on the boat ride. North swells rarely affect the sheltered crater. |
| May–September | Generally steady trade winds and calm mornings. Occasional south swells can affect south-facing shores, including the crater’s open side. |
| October–November | Warm water and quieter boats outside the holidays; a good shoulder season. |
Water temperature stays comfortable all year, but a rash guard or thin wetsuit top keeps you warm on a long swim and protects against the sun.
Whale Season Bonus
Each winter, North Pacific humpback whales gather in the warm, shallow waters around Maui to breed and calve. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary protects these waters, and federal rules keep boats at least 100 yards from the whales. From December through April, many Molokini boats spot spouts and breaches on the way out, and some trips add a short whale watch.
Underwater, you may even hear male humpbacks singing while you snorkel. It is one of the most memorable sounds in Hawaii.

Beating the Crowds
- Take the earliest departure you can manage.
- Choose a smaller boat if quieter water matters more than comfort.
- Avoid the Christmas–New Year period and spring break if you can.
- On a cruise, ask our advisors for sailings with an overnight or long day on Maui, which gives you more trip times to choose from.
Timing Questions
What is the best month to snorkel Molokini?
Molokini can be snorkeled all year. Summer often brings the calmest trade-wind mornings, while winter adds humpback whales on the boat ride. The time of day matters more than the month: go early.
Why do some trips get cancelled or diverted?
High wind, large swell or strong currents can make the crater unsafe. Captains then cancel or switch to a sheltered coastal reef. It is a safety call, so build some flexibility into your plans if you can.
